WILKESBORO, N.C. -- Police in Wilkesboro arrested a woman Saturday after they say she drove into a cornfield.

Officers at a traffic checkpoint at the intersection of East Main Street and Greenhill Road said they saw Machell Diane Barber coming towards them. She put on her turn signal and turned left, straight into the field.

Police say when they asked her what she was doing in the cornfield the woman told them she thought it was a road.

Two children were in the car: a 6-year-old and a 5-year-old.

Police say the children were not sitting in a weight appropriate child seat and were not buckled.

Officials charged Barber with Child Seat Violation and Driving While License Revoked. She was taken to the Wilkes County Women's Detention Center; a judge set her bond at $750.
