GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The holiday season is upon us, which means our roads, railways and airways will be filled with people traveling to be with family.
Some flights coming to and leaving Piedmont Triad International airport are delayed because of weather. Flash flood warnings forced Amtrak to slow the speed of many of its trains, causing more delays.
We talked to people across the Triad who are waiting to get home to family or waiting on their loved ones to arrive.
One man at the Greensboro Depot was waiting on his son and daughter to make it home for Christmas. His son was on time, but his daughter had been having trouble flying home from Philadelphia.
"It's so stressful," said Michael Thompson. "They tell us every year that it's going to be disarrayed. You might get out on time, you might not get back on time. That just starts a whole ball of fire when you're laying around the airport, waiting on this plane, this train, this bus to take off."
Another woman's train to New York was delayed nearly 12 hours, but she was taking her trip to see her family in stride.
"I'm just grateful that everyone is safe and the holidays will be merry," said Anna Maria Gabriel. "Just understand that it's nature and you're better off safe than sorry."
To help you cope with some of the stresses of holiday travels, we've found a few phone apps to help you get to where you need to be safely.
The Amtrak app allows you to purchase tickets, check the status of your train and find train stations near you. FlySmart helps flyers navigate airports and check temperatures in destination cities, among other things. And, Sigalert gives you up-to-the-minute traffic updates to help you avoid traffic jams on the way to see your family.
