SENECA, SC-- Two children are dead after an early morning crash in Oconee County. Their mother is now charged with driving under the influence.
The Oconee County Coroner says two young sisters were killed during the accident on Wells Highway near Utica Baptist Church around 2:15 a.m. New Year's Day.
The 1-year-old child, Taniyia Chavez Leann Gambrell, was found in a child safety seat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 4 year-old child, Saryia Unique Patton-Dean, was restrained by a shoulder/lap belt assembly. She went into cardiac arrest at the scene. EMS rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle, the mother, Melissa Patton, lost control, struck a sign, and overturned. She is now charged with two counts of felony DUI with death.
Patton is also charged with driving under a suspended license. Her bond was set at $50,652 at a hearing Wednesday morning. She remains in the Oconee County Detention Center.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating.
A vigil has been planned for 7 p.m.
