GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Guilford Co. Sheriff's department has hired retired detectives to investigate the cause of the Eastern Guilford high school fire in 2006.

The retired detectives work part-time and can dedicate more time to cold cases like the high school fire.

"We feel like we've made a lot of headway, but we're just not quite there to be able to make a charge at this particular time," said Col. Randy Powers. "However, we're very close. It takes just a little bit more and we can have it. We're just waiting for it to come in. We are watching and waiting and looking and the case is still open."

The fire started in a chemistry lab in 2006, destroying the high school and leaving more than 1,000 students without a school building. The school was rebuilt and opened in 2009. No one has been arrested in the case.
