It just wouldn't be the right thing to do.

That's what leaders in the city of Asheboro are saying about this year's Fourth of July fireworks display.

So they've decided to cancel the show the city has sponsored jointly with the Chamber of Commerce for the last five years.

The chamber and the city government have been splitting the ten-thousand dollar cost for the Independence Day fireworks display.

But a tough budget year led to layoffs within the city government and organizers say it doesn't seem appropriate to spend the money on fireworks.

George Gusler of the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce says the city has always been a big supporter of the Independence Day celebration.  But Gusler says:  "When you have to look employees in the eye and tell them their jobs have been eliminated because of a tight budget, it doesn't seem right to spend five thousand dollars on fireworks for the 4th of July."

However, Asheboro won't be without a fireworks display to celebrate Independence day.

The Copperheads baseball team will sponsor fireworks at McCrary Stadium the night on July 3rd after their game.
