Nextdoor App Allows You to Register Your Pets in Case They Go Missing

Pet owners, listen up: Nextdoor is rolling out a new pet directory in case your furry friends go missing.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A popular neighborhood app is rolling out a new feature called the pet directory.

“He’s my everything. He’s my child,” Bethan Guana smiled.

“He likes to eat a lot,” said 12-year-old Antonio Knox.

"We just got him on Thursday. He's about seven weeks old," laughed Robert Ames.

We all love our pets and we hate it when they go missing, but unfortunately, it seems to happen all the time.

We see the flyers shared on social media every day. But now, pet owners can stray from the Facebook posts and "missing" signs.

The popular Nextdoor app, known for keeping neighbors connected about everything from events to crime, has rolled out its new pet directory. And it's getting pet owners' attention.

“I could see myself downloading it,” Ames said.

“It would definitely be helpful to have people that are aware of dogs getting loose, especially cause there’s a lot of dogs and people around,” Guana added.

You upload a picture of your pet and share its breed, color, and size. However, officials say you may be sharing more than you want to.

In the about section, it says users' addresses will also be shared with their neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods by default.

“Well, anytime you put your address online anywhere obviously it could be a concern,” said Officer Jonathan Frisk with CMPD.

Police said at this point, there haven’t been any issues with pets getting stolen and homes targeted.

“That we’re aware of Nextdoor has had no issues at all in terms of people having their addresses on there and being targeted because they put their address on there,” Frisk added.

Even though your pet’s address is automatically included, the app says users can change their pet’s visibility with a quick edit.
