2 NC Men Drown After Car Goes Into Pond: Coroner

LORIS, SC - The bodies of two North Carolina men were pulled from a pond in South Carolina after hours of searching this weekend.

Horry County Deputy Cororner Michelle McSpadden says Edgar Domenico-Torres, 23, and Phillip Taylor, 26, were found under water in Loris, a small town near the NC/SC border.

Both men are from Tabor City, NC. Their bodies were identified Sunday afternoon when McSpadden says they died from drowning.

A call to 911 was made around 2:42 a.m. Saturday when a car was seen under water in a pond off Hulls Island Road. A caller told rescue crews that someone was on top of a dark blue Hyundai Sonata.

Horry County Fire Rescue spokesperson Mark Nugent said rescue dive operations began around 10 a.m. Saturday, but no victims could be found. Around midday, rescue divers found the bodies and found that the car was submerged 18 feet deep.

Officials haven't said what caused the car to go into the pond.
