RALEIGH, N.C. -- The state Court of Appeals says the man who was a teenager when he killed UNC student body president Eve Carson should stay behind bars for life.
The court ruled Tuesday that Laurence Lovette Jr. was sentenced correctly to life without parole for the 2008 murder.
The 23-year-old Lovette was convicted of first-degree murder in December 2011.
The U.S. Supreme Court then ruled that offenders under the age of 18 can't receive life sentences without parole unless mitigating circumstances are considered. Lovette was 17 when Carson was killed.
A second hearing was held in Orange County Superior Court, and Lovette was again sentenced to life without parole. The Appeals Court ruled Tuesday that was the right decision.
Carson was kidnapped from her Chapel Hill home and shot five times.
