Deputy: DUI Suspect Left Toddler Home Alone

Sumter, S.C. -- Sumter Sheriff's Deputies have arrested a woman they say was driving drunk while she left her toddler home alone.

Deputies pulled Edith Rita Amerson,44, over around 4:30 Monday morning. Deputies say that during the process of the arrest she admitted that she left her 20 month old son home alone.

Deputies went to Amerson's home on Cold Stream Drive in Sumter County and found the child asleep.

Officers contacted the child's father, who came to the home. The child was released to his custody.

Amerson was charged with unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person and DUI.
