Driver And Panhandler Charged In Hit-And-Run: Winston-Salem Police

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Winston-Salem Police say a driver and a pedestrian have both been charged in a hit-and-run accident. 

The accident happened Monday evening on Peters Creek Parkway in front of the K&W Cafeteria. 

Police say a panhandler stepped into oncoming traffic and a car hit him. According to witnesses, the driver tried to avoid the crash, but was unable to do so. 

Police say the driver left the scene but returned a few minutes later. 

The driver, Mr. Adrian McCloud, was charged with Felony Hit and Run. He was given a $10,000 unsecured bond. He was also cited for Marijuana Possession and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 

Police say the man who was hit - Mr. Donald Charles Thompson Jr. - was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way to Vehicular Traffic. 

According to police, Mr. Thompson is a properly registered panhandler through the City of Winston-Salem. 

Mr. Thompson is being treated at Baptist Hospital. He is expected to be okay.
