Abused NC Toddler Dies, Mother's Boyfriend Charged With Murder

A northwest Charlotte man is accused of severely beating his girlfriend's son.

CHARLOTTE, NC – A 2-year-old boy that suffered multiple bodily injuries, as well as a traumatic brain injury from alleged abuse from his mother's boyfriend, has died as a result of his injuries. 

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to Carolinas Medical Center Wednesday evening after hospital staff reported they were treating a 2-year-old for multiple bodily injuries, as well as a traumatic brain injury.

When detectives arrived at the hospital, they were told that the child’s injuries were considered life-threatening and that he could not breathe on his own.

Investigators interviewed the child’s mother and boyfriend, identified as 25-year-old Christopher Sims, as well as hospital staff. Police said the initial investigation determined that the child was left alone with Sims when he suffered those injuries. On Thursday evening, investigators were notified by hospital staff that the child died as a result of his injuries. 

Detectives obtained a murder warrant for Sims following the child's death. He was previously charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Anyone with information about this incident or any other crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
