GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A home invasion suspect was shot and killed after he broke into a home near Goldsboro in Wayne County early Saturday morning, deputies say.
The incident happened at about 4:15 a.m. at 202 Little River Drive in the Hooks Meadow neighborhood, which is northwest of Goldsboro, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said in an email.
The suspect has not been identified because deputies say that he did not have any identification with him.
The homeowner and his family were first alerted to a possible break-in when their home alarm went off, deputies said.
“The homeowner went to check on the alarm. When he did not see anything wrong he returned to bedroom when the alarm was activated again,” deputies said.
“When the homeowner went to check again he was surprised by the suspect who held a gun on the homeowner. The homeowner, defending himself, got into a struggle with the suspect. During the struggle a firearm went off shooting the suspect,” according to deputies.
The homeowner immediately called law enforcement to report the incident, officials said. No charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner, according to officials.
Deputies described the suspect as a white male in his 30s with dark hair and facial hair. He was wearing a mask on his face and was dressed in all black, deputies say.
The suspect was first transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Vidant in Greenville, where he later died.
If anyone has information that may lead to the identification of the suspect they are asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481.
