Former SC SRO Cleared Of Charges In Viral Classroom Incident

A video has spread on social media of an incident between a school resource officer at Spring Valley High and a student.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The school resource officer who was fired after video surfaced of him throwing a student across the room of a high school in South Carolina will not face criminal charges related to the incident, according to the Solicitor's Office. 

Friday, Dan Johnson, solicitor of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina, said Senior Deputy Ben Fields' actions in the classroom of Spring Valley High School on October 26, 2015, do not warrant criminal charges. 

Senior Deputy Fields attempted to arrest a student who was disruptive in class and uncooperative with both her teacher and a school administrator who attempted to remove her from the classroom. When Senior Deputy Fields attempted to apprehend her, the student resisted and a struggle ensued, and the several students in the classroom videotaped the incident. 

Johnson's findings come from a review of all relevant evidence from the join State Law Enforcement Division/FBI investigation, including the student's electronic messages, witness accounts and medical records. 

Senior Deputy Fields was fired from the Richland County Sheriff's Office after the video surfaced. 

At the time of his firing, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said both the teacher and the administrator who interacted with the student before the resource officer was called into the room felt everything Senior Deputy Fields did was correct and that he didn't use excessive force. 

Sheriff Lott, however, said he had problems with it and that ultimately he had to make the decision. Sheriff Lott said the decision was not hard to make and was based on the evidence that was collected from witness interviews and at least three cellphone recordings of the incident.
