WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Winston-Salem police say a person was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a car early Friday morning.
Around 1:45am officers responded to a report of gunshots in the parking lot of 550 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Minutes after responding to the report, the Winston-Salem Fire Department discovered a silver Acura MDX that had collided with another car parked at 715 N. Cleveland Avenue.
Police say they found 29-year-old, James Anthony Davis Jr., shot to death in the passenger seat of the Acura. They say he died at the scene.
Officers say their preliminary investigation shows the Acura was driven to a business located at 550 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive just after 1:00 a.m. The people inside the car, including Davis, went inside the business. While they were inside police say another car, a Dodge Charger, pulled up near the Acura and stayed there until the two people came out of the business. They say a black man went up to the passenger-side window and shot Davis.
They then say the Charger drove north toward Cleveland avenue. The Acura, with Davis inside, left the area before colliding with the car parked at 715 N Cleveland Avenue minutes later, according to police.
Detectives say they're still investigating but do not believe this was a random act of violence. This is the 24th homicide in Winston-Salem in 2017, surpassing the 23 homicides that happened in 2016.
