RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh Police shut down a portion of Interstate 440 east on Friday night after a shooting that stemmed from a road rage situation, officials said.
Police said that I-440 eastbound was shut down for nearly an hour between Glenwood Avenue and Six Forks Road.
Officials said that a 22-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when she was hit by gunfire and was then transported to WakeMed. The shooting happened during a road rage confrontation but police did not provide details.
The woman who was shot suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries, police said.
The woman’s car appeared to have at least four bullet holes on the driver’s side, with three in the driver’s door.
The wounded woman had a friend who was in the passenger seat during the shooting. Police said they are hoping to talk to the passenger because the wounded woman was unable to talk to police while she undergoing treatment for her injuries.
Authorities said they were searching for a man who was driving an SUV with a woman as his passenger, but did not have a more complete description.
Police said they responded to a shooting call on I-440 east at 7:57 p.m.
The traffic alert was issued around 8:17 p.m. The highway reopened around 8:50 p.m.
