'eBook Fridays' A Hit For Students

Northeast Middle school students are discovering lots of new books thanks to a new reading initiative. The school's media specialist Freda Howell started eBook Fridays with a goal to increase student reading by 20-percent. The initiative started in March but since then participation has increased to 126-percent.

On Fridays, both students and teachers stop what they're doing to download and read an ebook on their mobile devices. Those students without cell phones can read a traditional book.

Families can find out more about eBooks and also download the free app during Family Fun Day. It's a free event on Saturday, May 31 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at City Lake Park in Jamestown.

Guilford County Schools will now get to add thousands more eBook to its school and district bookshelves thanks to a new $500,000 digital resources grant from the Department of Public Instruction.
