Kernersville Elem. Teacher Named WS/FCS Teacher Of The Year

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools named Amy Pantano 2014-15 Teacher of the Year. Pantano teaches fifth grade at Kernersville Elementary.

Her class includes students who speak English as a second language, students with learning disabilities and students who are academically gifted. Officials say she works hard to find the best way to serve all of her students. Her goal is not only to have her students learn what they need to learn in the classroom, but to also shine as a person.

Terrisi Welch, who teaches on the same team as Pantano, says "Her genuine love of her students and ability to be able to see and know what they need individually."

Committee members said they were impressed by how much Pantano knows about each of her student's lives. Her students say that she's nice, funny, and is always on the positive side.

Pantano has been teaching fifth grade at Kernersville Elementary for eight years. She said her desire to become a teacher caught fire toward the end of her student teaching in college. "Once you see a kid get into something, you want more of that. It's addictive….there was no way I was going to be able to do anything else after that."

Pantano said she has no plans to ever do anything else. "That connection with the students and families is what gets me up in the morning. This is my niche The classroom is where I belong."
