Navigating The Health Insurance Marketplace

Guilford County, N.C. -- Many people are still navigating through and the Health Insurance Marketplace trying to figure out their options. There are two workshops on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 and Thursday, February 27, 2014 to help you out.

Susan Shumaker, president of the Cone Health Foundation and Janet McAuley-Blue with Legal Aid of North Carolina talked about the free workshops Tuesday on the Good Morning Show.

Here's what the Affordable Care Act says: "Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all U.S. citizens are required to have health insurance by March 31, 2014 or face a penalty."

The penalty in 2014 is calculated one of two ways. You'll pay whichever of these amounts is higher explained McAuley-Blue. "One percent of your yearly household income. The maximum penalty is the national average yearly premium for a bronze plan. That's $95 per person for the year ($47.50 per child under 18). The maximum penalty per family using this method is $285."

The fee increases every year. In 2015 it's 2% of income or $325 per person.

In 2016 and later years it's 2.5% of income or $695 per person.

After that it is adjusted for inflation. If you're uninsured for just part of the year, 1/12 of the yearly penalty applies to each month you're uninsured. If you're uninsured for less than 3 months, you don't have to make a payment.

The workshops, presented by Legal Aid of North Carolina and Partnership for Community Care, will give people more information about securing health insurance and an opportunity to get any questions answered. The presentation will include information on coverage provisions, including public and private health insurance coverage and the marketplace enrollment process.

Guilford County Parent Academy is hosting the two free workshops to get parents started. To register, call 336-279-4924 or visit

The workshops take place Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the High Point Museum and again on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Sedgefield Elementary.
