1 Killed, 1 Injured In Separate NC Climbing Accidents

LINVILLE GORGE, N.C. (WCNC) – One climber died at Crowders Mountain and another survived at Linville Gorge after unrelated falls on Monday.

The deadly accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday on the Tower Trail, according to officials.

Rescuers performed CPR, but the victim did not survive. Authorities say he fell 70 feet.

The man has not yet been identified. Witnesses say he hit his head and was seen dangling until crews could access him.

Rescuers used a Black Hawk helicopter to get to a climber who fell from Shortoff Mountain in Burke County.

Emergency Management Director Mike Long said the unidentified 23-year-old climber was conscious and alert when rescuers from the Charlotte Fire Department reached him Monday afternoon.

Long said the man fell about 50 feet.

Long said one rescuer rapelled down the mountainside, while another rescuer came down from the helicopter to reach the victim, who was lifted into the helicopter.

The helicopter was dispatched through the N.C. Division of Emergency Management from an Army National Guard unit in Rowan County.

Charlotte Fire Capt. Mark Basnight said the climber was taken to Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Shortoff Mountain is near Linville Gorge, and its steep face is popular among rock climbers.
