11-Year-Old Dies After Being Hit By Minivan In Winston-Salem

Daughter Killed Getting Mail

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Eleven year old Aaliyah Rivera died after a mini-van driver hit her Thursday on Shattalon Drive in Winston-Salem.

WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner sat down with her mother, Minerva Rivera, the day after. She is heartbroken but wanted to share her daughter's story and how she hopes people will remember her.

"Aaliyah was a happy girl. Very jolly. Very playful. You could say the center of attention. Very sassy," Rivera said. "Always wanted to look good. Always wanted to be perfect."

Aaliyah was a student at Gibson Elementary. Her mother said she was walking across the street to get the mail when she was hit.

"Like she would every day. She would come home drop off her bag, she took out the garbage like she always does, check the mail, cross the street and come back. No problem," she said.

Investigators said the woman was unable to stop before hitting Aaliyah.

According to Rivera the fire department performed CPR when they arrived and Aaliyah was transported to the hospital where she was put on life support. The family made the decision to take her off around 9:00 Thursday night.

Aaliyah was looking forward to her first communion and her mother said she was practicing her prayers and Bible verses. It was very important to Aaliyah that she be baptized and the family made sure she was before she passed away.

"This is the worst pain a mother could ever feel. It won’t go away but I have to think about my other kids," Rivera said.

Aaliyah had five siblings.

Winston-Salem Police are still investigating the crash. No word of any charges at this time. The driver of the van was not injured.
