2 Die In Mebane Police Chase

MEBANE, N.C. -- Mebane police have identified two victims killed in a car crash that started after police officers tried to pull the car over.

Police say Jazzman Vontrazc Jacobs of Mebane and Michael Earl Walker, Jr. of Hillsborough both died in the crash.

Investigators said an officer tried to stop the car driven by Rashawn Lee Jacobs, on U.S. 70 in Mebane early Sunday morning because the driver appeared to be impaired. But the car sped away.

Officers lost sight of the car, but found it wrecked off the side of the road a short time later. Authorities say three men were pinned inside. Jacobs is in stable condition at Duke University Medical Center.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. Officer Nicholas McCormick and Sergeant Adam Cole are on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard policy and procedure.

The Mebane Police Department stated in a news release "One can never predict the outcome in the situations. We do know however, that loss of life is never the intent. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this incident."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
