GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Cooking fires are the leading cause of fires in the home. But a 2-alarm fire at an apartment complex was started by an air conditioner.
Firefighters in Florida blamed it on a mechanical or electrical problem with the unit.
According to the NFPA, air conditioning units, fans or other related equipment caused 7,400 house fires in 2010.
There are several things you can do to make sure your AC unit is running safely.
First, get it inspected each year. That $80-100 could save you a lot of money down the road. Inspectors might catch a minor problem that would have turned into a big problem had it not been fixed.
If you haven't already, wipe down the unit's vents and coils. Over the winter they get clogged with debris. You can use a garden hose to do that.
Change the filter to help it run more efficiently.
