Do Schools Re-hire Fired Employees?

GREENSBORO, NC -- 2 Wants to Know has continued to stay on top of a story that touched all of our hearts. In December 2012, Billy Bailey hit and killed Hasani Wesley as he crossed the street to catch his school bus. Bailey accepted a plea deal last month - but over the course of his trial, we also learned about the driving record of Hasani's bus driver.

On the day of Hasani's death, Stephanie Fulton violated school policy by stopping in the opposite direction of his designated stop. But she'd had issues before. The district cited her for driving the wrong way in a traffic circle while going 10 miles over speed limit. In 2008, she's alleged to have ran a stop sign, and another time she crashed her bus into another bus at a low speed. In 2006, the district fired her but they re-hired her six months later.

We want to park right there for a moment. Because we started thinking - why would they re-hire someone who's had all those issues? And could it happen again?

So 2 Wants to Know did some checking with not only Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools but other Triad districts as well. We found Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools implemented a policy regarding re-hiring in 2008. Fired employees can't be rehired for at least five years. Guilford, Davidson and Rockingham County schools all have policies in place where they will not re-hire fired employees.
