Equifax Breach: Your Top 3 Questions

Do I Need To Worry About Equifax Data Breach?

GREENSBORO, NC – 2WTK spent 90 minutes on Facebook and TV answering your questions about the Equifax data breach, credit freezes and credit reports.

There were several main questions folks asked as they joined in through the 90 minutes. But first:
*Check Equifax to see if your information has been impacted
*Freeze your credit
*Check your credit report (Do it for FREE here)

Tom Luzon, the Director of Consumer Credit Counseling Services in Greensboro was our expert to help answer these questions.

CAN I USE MY CREDIT CARDS IF I PUT A FREEZE ON MY CREDIT?

Andrea asked, “If I put a freeze on my credit what does this exactly mean? I can still use my credit cards, etc?”

Yes, you can still use your credit cards. A freeze on your credit means no one can open new accounts or get a loan in your name. It's your best protection.

So you can still use them like you always would, but if you want to apply for a car loan  or a new credit card, you'll have to unfreeze it.

IF MY CREDIT ISN’T GOOD, DO I STILL NEED TO WORRY?

Nancy thought that maybe because she didn’t have a lot of money or her credit wasn’t good, she didn’t need to do anything.

“Just because se your credit is bad doesn't mean it’s actually a protection for you. Bad credit can be fixed. I would say go ahead and put a freeze on it and go about getting it fixed,” explains Lozon.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO FREEZE MY CREDIT?

Ingrid and many others asked, “What do I need to do to freeze my credit?”

2WTK is making it easy for you and giving you the links right here, although the websites are all overloaded at this point, so you may have to try more than once.

You have to freeze your credit with all three credit bureaus. This is a free service..

TransUnion

Equifax

Experian

NOTE: You can temporarily “thaw” your freeze so you can get a car loan or a credit card. To do that you’ll need to get a PIN from each of the bureaus. Often, they do this by mail. And if you lose your PIN they can charge you to get it back.
