GREENSBORO, NC – Got lunch? Now you can GIVE lunch to your homebound neighbors.
Meals on Wheels delivered 219 million meals nationally in 2016. More 500,000 veterans were served in the last year.
Locally, the Guilford County Meals On Wheels program through Senior Resources of Guilford celebrates 40 years.
I got to experience a morning of delivery with a couple who has been a constant in Greensboro. Volunteers Lucille and Dale Bennett are regulars. Lucille has delivered meals for 40 years in and Dale, 25. The couple delivered separately for a long time and within the last few years have teamed up together.
“It's what life is supposed to do. You do for others”, says Lucille.
Lucille and Dale are two of a group of volunteers that delivered more than 9,000 meals in October alone and more than 38,000 so far this year. And there's still 170 homebound folks who are on the waiting list.
It costs about $1,300 to feed a senior for a year that breaks down to a $25 donation to feed a senior for a week.
“It's the way you should treat friends and neighbors,” adds Dale.
Got time? Being a Meals on Wheels volunteer is a 2-hour commitment each month. No matter what town you're in-- you can help your neighbors by finding the local Meals On Wheels near you.
