Hotel Fines You For Negative Reviews Online

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Think what you post online is consequence free? The Consumerist blog reports a New York Hotel is fining brides and grooms for each bad review posted by their guests. The cost? $500 out of their deposit for each comment.

2 Wants To Know looked at a similar issue last November and found it's all in the terms of services. 2 Wants To Know talked with a First Amendment lawyer Larry Walters of the Walters Law Group. He thought putting a "no negative review" clause in the terms of service was sneaky.

"Frankly it's unrealistic to expect the consumer to read through many pages of legalese and boilerplate every time they do business with an on-line service provider. That's why entities like the FTC and other consumer protection agencies will enforce consumer protection laws and say, 'Look, this is not reasonable.'"
