DOBSON, N.C. -- Everyone is keeping an eye on Hurricane Irma - and so are vineyards.
Vintners in North Carolina could be making last-minute decisions on whether or not to pick their grapes from the vine, according to winemaking experts with the Surry Community College vineyard.
So, what does it pour down to? The rain.
“The problem is that even one to two inches of rain will cause the sugars to drop. If the wind doesn’t tear the grapes from the vine, the fruit would rot before the sugar levels have a chance to recover,” said Ashley Morrison, Chair of the Science Division at Surry Community College.
Morrison says picking the grapes too early means the acid level is still high, and the sugar content isn't at its best.
As of Saturday, Surry Community College vineyard was not harvesting grapes.
