How The NC Teacher Raises Shake Out In The New Budget

GREENSBORO, NC -- Governor Pat McCrory signed the $21.2 billion budget. It includes a raise for most state workers. State retirees will get a 1% cost-of-living increase under the compromise plan. There are no reductions in medicaid eligibility and no tax increases.

Probably the most talked about part of the budget are the teacher raises. Teachers will get a raise that legislative leaders say amounts, on average, to 7%. Again, that is the average raise.

When 2WTK talked to the Department of Public Instruction, a spokesperson helped us make sense of how the averages work out:

1 to 4 year teachers: 7%

5 year teachers: 18.5%

20 year teachers: 9%

29 year teachers: 1.7%

When it comes to teachers with 30-plus years we asked for clarification from the state if the teachers get any raise at all.

We're digging deeper into the teacher pay issue and will have more for you on 2WTK Friday.
