GREENSBORO, NC -- When you think of Black Friday shopping you think TV's, clothing deals, small appliances. But a big seller, at least the last couple of year, has been guns. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System processed 185,345 on Nov. 27th. It's a 5% increase over black Friday 2014.
USA TODAY reported it was the biggest day on record.
Black Friday gun sales aren't all that unusual. In fact, Black Friday's for the last three years made the FBI's top 10 list of the most background checks processed in a 24-hour period. Those are national numbers. 2WTK looked at FBI data to break it down.
The states with the most FBI background checks include Texas with a little more than 16-thousand and Kentucky with a little more than 13-thousand.
But the FBI numbers don't tell the whole story.
You see—the states in green—texas and Kentucky included—run all their handgun and long gun background checks through the fbi.
But the states in yellow—including north Carolina—only run long gun checks through the f-b-i—handguns are run through the state—more specifically each sheriff's office
According to the f-b-i—north Carolina had 2-thousand 826 checks run for long guns on black Friday… that's actually a 24-percent decrease from last year's numbers.
2 wants to know is still working on getting the handgun numbers.
