Manufacturing: The Triad's Comeback Kid

GREENSBORO, NC -- More is manufactured in the Triad than you think. Catherine Carlock of The Triad Business Journal joins 2 Wants to Know Tuesday to talk about why manufacturing is the Triad's comeback kid.

"Manufacturing has been the backbone of the Triad's economy for more than a century, going back to textile and tobacco and furniture manufacturing," Carlock said.

Tens of thousands of jobs left the Triad before and during the Great Recession of the late 2000's, but manufacturing is growing once again. Last week, Reynolds American in Winston-Salem announced its purchase of Lorillard Inc. in Greensboro.

"Reynolds is expected to add what it says is a significant number of new jobs at the Tobaccoville plant in Winston-Salem. In fact, Reynolds is right now adding 200 new jobs to support production of its Vuse e-cigarette product at its Tobaccoville manufacturing facility," Carlock said.

The Triad's aviation industry is growing as well. Carlock said the production of a new lightweight jet by Honda Aircraft Company will provide jobs in customer service at the Piedmont Triad International Airport.

Carlock said right now plastics parts is a growing manufacturing segment here locally. Bright Plastics, a Greensboro-based company, is currently expanding and adding jobs.

"It makes everything from parts for kayaks and canoes to trash can lids to surgical forceps used by doctors. Bright Plastics already has about 130 employees, and it's growing so much that it needs another 22 more to support that demand," she said.
