GREENSBORO, N.C. -- No, that isn't a Guilford County sheriff's deputy calling to tell you that you're under arrest for missing jury duty unless you pay up.
It's a scam artist.
Sheriff BJ Barnes says the sheriff's office has received a high volume of calls from concerned citizens about the fraudulent phone calls.
Here's how it works - the crook pretends to be a sheriff's deputy and informs you that you've missed jury duty or you have outstanding criminal warrants. The scammer then says you'll be arrested unless you make a payment over the phone to settle the missed jury summons or outstanding warrant.
Don't fall for these lowlifes.
Sheriff Barnes says the sheriff's office will NEVER try to collect money from you over the phone.
If you get a call like this, don't give them any personal information. JUST HANG UP, and call 911 or the Guilford County Sheriff's Office at 336-641-3694 to report the scam.
