Report: Car Seat Installation Easier In Newer Cars

Car Seat Latches

If your kid is in a car seat, listen up. Normally we think the first time we install a seat is the only time we worry about it. But really between all the travel and use, you should be checking to see if the seat needs to be re-adjusted every six months or so.

"When the latch hardware is difficult to use, parents can make a lot of mistakes and leave their children less protected in the event of a crash," said Insurance Institute For Highway Safety Senior Research Engineer Jessica Jermakian.

LATCH or 'lower anchors and tethers for children' aren't all equal. An engineer says the most important factor is where the latch hardware is placed.

"A common problem with the lower anchors is they're buried too deep in the seat," said Jermakian.
Why does easy access matter?" asked Correspondent Wijia Jiang.
"When it's this easy to find, parents can find it and attach the connector," said Jermakian.

Research shows placing the car seat in the middle position is the safest spot for a child to sit.

It seems every year the newest car models have better systems, but that doesn't mean you don't need help. You can always get your child car seat inspected at your local EMS or fire department. It's free. Just call and make an appointment.
