Scary Clown Sightings Go Back To 2014

Clown Sightings Are Nothing New

GREENSBORO, N.C. - There's no way around it.  These people hiding in the woods dressed as clowns are creepy.  And the more cases we hear about, the creepier it gets. Now reports of a clown near a Greensboro apartment complex. Last weekend we had reports of a clown being spotted in Winston-Salem. Before that in South Carolina. But creepy clowns walking around town or trying to lure kids isn't new.

2 Wants To Know started looking into the clown sighting reports around the nation. CBS New York investigative reporters believe an Instagram post in 2014 really started the concern about clown sightings. The posters of the photo were all linked to a horror movie production company.

Although it is lawful to dress as a clown, given the heightened tensions about these entertainers, officials are discouraging "copycat" behavior by individuals who may find it humorous to mimic the suspicious behavior that has parents on edge. "Copycats" unnecessarily alarm the public, and place an unnecessary drain on police resources.
