GREENSBORO, NC -- More of you may be venturing out Friday and over the weekend..heading to stores...maybe trying still trying to have a romantic Valentine's dinner date. Two Wanted to Know who's responsible for clearing sidewalks and parking lots...and who's liable if you fall.
We've checked the ordinances of many cities in the Triad. All the ordinances say property owners or the business owner is the one who has to get out there and shovel the snow or plow the parking lot.
But what happens if you slip and fall? It turns out liability is a slippery issue. Many insurance agents actually tell their business clients not to touch the snow at all.
And here's why: You know it can be really hard to remove every icy patch from a sidewalk. And the puddle on the sidewalk in the afternoon will freeze early evening. Insurance agents say that's when a business or property owner becomes liable if someone slips and falls.
And homeowners listen up - the same rules apply to you.
