Utility Companies Unite To Stop Scammers

Utility Companies Work Together To Stop Scammers

CLEMMONS, N.C. -- It's a tug-a-war against scammers.

Duke energy and 90 other utility companies teamed up to create Utilities United Against Scams.

They want to put an end to scammers using their names to steal your money.

Jimmy Flythe, the director of Government Community Relations with Duke Energy, told 2 Wants to Know the group launched in 2016 and it's made good progress so far.

“We've been able to shut down a lot of toll free numbers and make it more difficult for the scammers to do this.” Flythe said.

While scammers are still out there, Flythe says fewer Duke customers are falling for scams because of all the awareness.

Wednesday is also Utility Scam Awareness day.

A reminder from Duke Energy, it will not call and threaten to turn off your electricity that same day.

You will receive several notices over a longer period before your power is turned off. If you do get one of those calls just hang up and call the utility yourself using the number listed on its website.

Duke Energy will NEVER ask for your payment in gift cards.
