ELON, NC -- Elon ranked third on a top 50 list of the safest cities in North Carolina. Five other Triad towns also made the cut.
SafeWise, a home security company compiled the top fifty list based on FBI statistics as well as their own examination comparing violent crimes and property crimes.
WFMY did some research of their own:
According to Elon Police statistics, in 2012 they had 1 reported rape. SBI statistics show that Greensboro had 70 rapes and Winston-Salem had 74 in 2012.
Out of all crimes in 2012, Elon's most common crime was larceny or theft. The town reported 94 of those in 2012. Greensboro had 8,153 and Winston-Salem had 8,500 .
Population wise, Greensboro and Winston-Salem are roughly 27 times larger than the town of Elon. Obviously, that's a factor. The Elon Chief of Police knows that but he also knows that community vigilance is key.
"They have larger areas of responsibility, more targets of opportunity, and people try to take advantage of that," said Chief Cliff Parker.
"Folks in the neighborhoods are involved, community watch programs are key to this and folks looking out for each other," added Parker.
Elon police told us their last homicide was about 15 years ago. It was domestic related. The one before that was 25 years prior.
The other Triad cities that made the list:
According to census data, roughly 9,500 people live in Elon compared to 277,000 in Greensboro and 234,000 in Winston. The median income in Elon is 20% higher than both Greensboro and Winston-Salem.
