WELCOME, N.C. -- It's the biggest race in NASCAR and one of the most famous numbers - and on Sunday a Triad native will be in both.
Austin Dillon is on the pole for the Daytona 500, the prime position for NASCAR's prime time race. Dillon's number represents a legacy known throughout the world of racing - Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
"There's been a lot of anticipation about bringing the car back with Austin who's going to be a rookie this year so everybody is really really excited about getting on the pole and getting off to such a great start," Torrey Galida, Chief Operating Officer of RCR.
The return of the famous number 3 car in the Sprint Cup Series couldn't have turned out better. Austin Dillon, the grandson of Richard Childress is in the number one spot.
"The whole RCR family is really excited about this and really enthusiastic about this Sunday," said Galida.
It was the "Intimidator" who made the number 3 car famous. It was last seen at Daytona in 2001, the day Earnhardt died in a wreck.
"Bring in a whole new generation who really doesn't remember Dale but is excited to see a really talented young driver in a really fast race car," said Galida.
