Crimestoppers Tip Helped Mebane Police Find Hit And Run Suspect

Crimestopper Tips Help Police Solve Crimes

ALAMANCE COUNTY, NC -- Every time the phone rings at Alamance County Wide Crimestoppers a crime could be one step closer to being solved.

"The phone line it can't tell us what number it's coming from or anything so it all stays anonymous," Stan Moss, the Alamance County Crimstoppers Liaison said.
The calls come in Moss makes sure the information goes out.
"And then we ship it to that agency and they conduct an investigation," he said.
That's what happened last week at the Mebane Police Department following a deadly hit and run.
Christopher Askey was walking near the intersection of North Third Street and West Center Street when a car hit him and kept driving.
Police found the suspect, Barbara Bigelow Wyatt, thanks to a Crimestoppers tip.
"That Crimestoppers report was extremely significant in being able to make contact with the person in question immediately," Mebane Police Chief Caldwell said.
Chief Caldwell said after detectives contacted Wyatt, she turned herself in and was later arrested.
"Anything that contributes to the solving of that case we'll pay a reward on," Moss said.
Moss said the Alamance County Crimestoppers have taken more than 800 calls this year. Last month they paid out $4,000 in reward money.
If you have any information about a crime, call Crimestoppers at 229-7100.
