Eden Mom Thankful To Spend Mother's Day With Family After Tornado

EDEN, NC -- A lot of progress has been made in Eden where a tornado ripped up 25 homes and 9 businesses last week.

Volunteers and city crews have spent the last week working to clean up the storm debris.

While, the situation is improving, a lot of work still remains.

Instead of picnics and shopping on Mother’s Day, some families in Eden will be spending their holiday cleaning up storm debris.

But after living through a tornado, Carol Stanford says she’s just happy to be alive for another Mother's Day with her family.

"You never think you would be in one,” said Stanford. “You just don't think about it."

Carol Stanford has lived on Madison Street for 43 years!

“It's just home,” she said. “I was born and raised in this area so this is home to me.”

But last week, she almost lost her home when an EF-1 tornado ripped through her neighborhood.

“It's something you think is going to happen to somebody else but not you,” said Stanford.

The storm brought down trees and power lines all over her yard.

It knocked down her storm gutters, destroyed her back porch, and damaged her roof!

But Stanford says she slept through it all and woke up without a scratch on her!

“I just feel very blessed,” said Stanford. “That's all I can say. I'm just very blessed.”

Stanford knows there’s still a lot more work to do to clean up her neighborhood.

But for now, she’s just looking forward to spending another Mother's Day with her kids.

“They are my life. That's just it. They mean everything to me,” said Stanford. “I don't know what I would do without either one of them.”

Stanford says all she wants to do for Mother's Day is go to church with her family so they can thank God that nobody was hurt or killed in the tornado.

The City of Eden is asking the state for money to help with the clean-up process.
