WASHINGTON -- A former IRS revenue officer from Greensboro is serving jail time for not paying more than $573,000 in taxes for over 16 years, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The DOJ says Henti Lucian Baird was sentenced to 43 months in prison. They say he filed his taxes every year, but he hasn't paid taxes since at least 1998.
Baird worked as an IRS revenue officer for 12 years. Court documents say he operated HL Baird's Tax Consultants from 1989 to 2014.
The DOJ says Baird used his knowledge as an IRS officer to avoid paying his own taxes. They say he hid hundreds of thousands of dollars he earned from his consulting business in bank accounts created under the names of his children.
When the IRS tried to collect from Baird, he claimed he only had one bank account.

Court documents say during the time Baird refused to pay his taxes, he continued to pay the mortgage on his 4,300 square-foot home, annual fees for his timeshare in Florida and car payments on his BMW.
In addition to his prison sentence, Baird was ordered to serve one year of supervised release and to pay $573,422.74 in restitution to the IRS. Baird pleaded guilty in October 2016.
