GUILFORD COUNTY, NC -- Over 100 friends and family members gathered Tuesday night to remember two high school students killed in a car accident.
Candles lit up the night sky at Southwest Guilford High School in honor of 17-year-old Jacob Goeke and 16-year-old Sami Faydi.
The teenagers were passengers in a car that crashed on Whites Mill Road in High Point last Saturday.
Goeke died on the scene. Faydi later died at the hospital.
A third passenger was also injured.
Police say speed and alcohol were factors when the driver crashed into a tree.
The family of Jacob Goeke says they're taking things day by day.
"You fly into the storm and you are one person,” said Goeke’s Father. “When you fly out of the storm you are a different person. That's the only way we're going to be able to get through this."
Students took turns sharing stories and offering condolences to the victims’ families.
“How can a mom cope with such pain? I just can't wrap my head around that,” said Saye Tazonen. “He was just my friend. But that's their kids.”
Students say campus hasn't been the same without the two.
“Classes have been quiet. First day back, lunch was quiet,” said Tazonen. “Everything is just quiet.”
“I can't really put into words how I feel,” said Jared Urbano. “It's just hard.”
But they’re holding on to each other for comfort.
“Everyone here, this is what makes us strong,” said Jacob Goeke’s aunt. “Thank you all for being here.”
As family and friends cope with such a great loss, they have a message for everyone else.
“Take care of yourself,” said Goeke’s father. “Love yourself and love those around here. Even if you don't know them very well. Even if you don't always get along with them. Take care of each other.”
Students are planning another memorial service for Jacob and Sami for Thursday evening 5 p.m. at the crash site on Whites Mill Road.
Police have charged the driver in the crash, 19-year-old Dwight Gray Jr., with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in addition to driving after drinking while under the age of 21.
