Caregiving 101: Weather-Proofing Doors, Windows

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's getting colder in the Triad, and one of the challenges caregivers will face is keeping their loved ones comfortable as the temperature fluctuates.

Being cold can be a trigger for a bad behavior for someone who has dementia, so Scott Silknitter from Caregiving 101 and Tom Garcia from Southern Evergreen offered tips on how to eliminate drafts.

Doors and windows can be a significant source of cool air coming into a house or a room. Here are a few easy, inexpensive steps to take in case you can't replace your doors and windows:

  • Add weather stripping
  • Use plastic sheeting for single-pane glass windows
  • Adjust screws to raise thresholds to meet doors and create a seal
  • Add a door sweep which can help block drafts

If you have questions for Scott you can reach him here. If you would like to reach Tom, email him at tom@southernevergreen.com.
