WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- In just a few days school will be out but hunger doesn't end when summer break begins. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina helps our hungry neighbors year round but during the summer months they pay close attention to kids in the Triad.
One in four kids in our area are food insecure. A lot of the time they don't know where their next meal will come from but for hundreds of kids that won't be as much of a problem this summer. Children are able to eat breakfast and lunch at schools but when class isn't in session Second Harvest is here to help. The Triad Community Kitchen will prepare, package, freeze and ship thousands of meals to close to 30 facilities that provide meals to children. Last year the team sent out 45,000 meals.
The kitchen that prepares the meals is a unique program itself. Launched in 2006, the Triad Community Kitchen helps people get back on their feet by teaching culinary skills and connecting them with jobs in the food industry. The chefs and students in the program are the ones creating meals for kids this summer.
You can help - every dollar donated makes seven meals! Now until June 30th your donation will be matched dollar for dollar. You can donate by going to the Second Harvest Food Bank's website: http://www.hungernwnc.org/. You can also follow that link to enroll in Second Harvest's programs.
