GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Cooler weather means it's time to kick up your feet and get comfortable on the back deck! But before your do, you need to take care of the wear and tear from last year.
Home renovation expert Tom Garcia shared some tips to transform your old deck on The Good Morning Show.
It's the time of the year you want to make the most of your outdoor living space. Many homes have decks but unfortunately they weather over time and become unusable. The deck boards become cracked and can actually cause injuries.
The good news is that even though the deck boards themselves are in poor shape, the structure of the deck may remain in good shape. It is not exposed to the harsh conditions of the deck boards and lasts longer. So, a great way to transform your deck is to just replace the deck boards and not the whole structure.
For the lowest maintenance possible, choose deck boards that are actually made from recycled plastic. They are designed to hold their color and shape for more than 20 years. In addition, they are attached to the deck structure using clips that hide below the surface of the deck. Therefore, there are no exposed screws or nails that can cause an injury. The final install makes for a smooth surface that is easy on the feet and requires little to no maintenance.
That same maintenance free technology can apply to the rails as well. You can use rails made of a vinyl material and the color is all the way through. They come as a kit so they are easy to install and require no painting. Just like the deck boards, the only maintenance required is some soap and water to keep them clean.
When you're done your deck will look brand new even though you only replaced the deck boards and railing. And even better, it will continue to look new for many years to come.
