Health Care Experts Offer Free Advice Before Deadline

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Open enrollment in the Affordable Care Act's federal and state health care exchanges closes March 31. Individuals who do not enroll by that date will face a tax penalty withheld from a tax refund. The penalty is one percent of income or $95 per adult and $47.50 per child in a household (whichever amount is greater). The exchanges will not re-open until Nov. 14.

Individuals can purchase health insurance outside of the federal and state marketplace at any time, but they will not be able to access government subsidies to reduce premium costs for outside plans.

Open enrollment options in the federal and state exchanges can be accessed and chosen by visiting or by calling 1-800-318-2596. The call center is staffed at all hours, and information is available in 150 languages.
