GREENSBORO, NC -- It's going to be a hot one! On Wednesday the Triad could reach 90 degrees for the first time this year. In this heat it's more about safety than comfort so WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner put together some tips and hacks to keep you cool.
There's a difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and you need to know what to expect and how to handle both. For heat exhaustion you might feel faint and dizzy, sweat more than usual, have clammy skin, feel sick or have a weak pulse. If your symptoms are like these you need to get in a cool area and drink water.
If you're having a heat stroke you'll likely have a throbbing headache, won't sweat, have red, dry skin, and have a fast and strong pulse. Call 911 if you have these symptoms.
You know to wear plenty of sunscreen and drink more water on these hot, hot days. You should be taking at least ten gulps of water every 20 minutes. Opt for light, loose clothing and reschedule outdoor activities for later, cool times of the day. If it's hotter tahn 90 degrees you don't want to have a fan blowing on you - the warm, dry air can make you even hotter! Instead face it out of a window so you blow the warm air out of your home.
And what about some do-it-yourself heat hacks? You can make your own air conditioner by placing ice or a frozen water bottle behind your fan to circulate cool air. If you have trouble sleeping in the heat try putting your sheets and pillows in the freezer throughout the day and cooling down your mattress with ice packs before bed. Looking for a refreshing mist to use throughout the day? Mix peppermint tea or essential oil with cool water in a spray bottle to cool off.
