How To Get Along With Your Mother-In-Law

Getting Along With Your Mother-In-Law

This past Sunday was National Mother-In-Law Day, a day to celebrate your spouse’s mother. We’ve heard stories about problems with the mothers. This morning let's talk about ways to make your relationships stronger with your mother-in-law.

When it comes to getting along with your mother-in-law, it starts with creating a solid foundation. I’ve got three tips to help you set the stage for a healthy relationship.

1) Have a positive mindset. Acting positive towards her – showing interest, saying hello, looking her in the eyes and facing her when you talk. Make sure you see the positive in what she says and does. It’s too easy to find fault and that gets you nowhere.

2) Ask her for her advice. Before you say anything, hear me out.  One thing that your mother-in-law will have on you is experience. She’s lived longer, she’s seen more and she’s learned from her own trial and error. You might be surprised at what gems about life she can share.

3) Find similarities between the two of you. Do you enjoy cooking, walking, reading, hiking, gardening, traveling. Sharing common interests allows you to create a bond. When you have a connection, it’ll be easier to manage hiccups in your relationship later on.

I’d love to hear what you’d add to this list. You can find me on my facebook page, Blanca Cobb – body language expert. Or, you can email me at bcobb@wfmy.com.
