How To Spot A Fake Friend

Spot A Fake Friend

Thursday is national best friends day. Earlier on the show, we talked about how good friendships are great for your emotional health.  To keep the positive benefits of having healthy friendships, you gotta to be to tell the difference between real and fake friends.

Here are some hallmarks of a real friend.

1) A real friend is with you during the good and bad times. They’ll fight the fight with you- giving you encouragement.

2) When something is off, they’ll want clarification. They don’t make assumptions and mind read.

3) They got your back when even you’re not around.  This is called loyalty.

Some tell tale signs of a fake friend:

1) They may say things and don’t follow through. “I’ll help you do X.” And they don’t. This isn’t an issue of forgetfulness.

2) They can be passive aggressive. “That’s great that you got the promotion. You were the only one who wanted the position?”

3) They tend to minimize what’s important to you: your feelings, accomplishments, fears, successes, wants, dreams.

If you're not sure what to do if you have a fake friend. Give them the benefit of the doubt. And monitor them over time. If you see a pattern of repeated negative behavior then you know you’ve got a fake friend.
