GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A mile-long line of cars stretched from the Exxon gas station on South Elm Eugene, down Elm Street to the Lee Street intersection Friday, as cars waited to receive $20 worth of free gas.
Mount Zion Baptist Church offered the gas to the first 225 cars in line. The first four customers said they had waited in line since 7:30 a.m.
Mount Zion Baptist church pastor Bryan J. Pierce said the church budgets and plans for this event each year, as part of its "No Greater Love" events on Easter weekend.
"It's all about sharing, and it's about salvation. We thought no greater way than to come out here and to give to people who might not come to us and just show love and kindness," he said.
Matthew Grant was the first customer to receive free gas. Expressing gratitude, he told WFMY News 2's Meghann Mollerus, "The economy is bad, and this was an opportunity for a church to help people. I just really needed the gas."
A gas station employee told WFMY News 2 the church finished the gas giveaway after 2 p.m.
