Operation Bed Roll: Plastic Mats Help Your Neighbors In Need

Greensboro Launches Operation Bed Roll

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's not yarn, it's not plastic, but thanks to the City of Greensboro and its community partners, the "Plarn" combination is helping people in need.

Starting this week, the city of Greensboro is transforming plastic bags into comfortable sleeping mats.  It's called Operation Bed Roll.

The unique mats give people in need a safe place to sleep.  They serve a dual purpose as they also keep non-recyclable materials out of our landfills.  Operation Bed Roll is a collaboration between the city of Greensboro's Field Operations, Library, Police Departments and community partners.

Greensboro Recycling Educator Tori Carle In the first year, more than 3,000 volunteers learned how to turn plastic bags into yarn or "plarn" - that could be crocheted into sleeping mats.  Residents created more than 200 sleeping mats, which the Interactive Resource Center and Greensboro Police distributed to homeless residents.  More than 100,000 plastic bags were diverted from landfills.

The first of the Plan-making Workshops for residents who want to learn to make plarn and bed rolls start this week and Run through September.
